Heavy volume for new free credit report service
Copyright Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Credit reporting bureaus reported heavy demand for a new service that allows Copyright Associated Pressconsumers to request free credit reports.

Tens of thousands of people took advantage of the new program that began Wednesday for consumers in 13 Western states. It will be available in stages to residents of other states over the next 10 months.

Rollout was staggered to help the nation's three major credit bureaus _ Equifax Inc., Experian Information Solutions and TransUnion _ handle the expected crush of requests. Banks and other lenders use the reports to evaluate loan applicants.

While total numbers were not yet available, TransUnion spokeswoman Colleen Martin said Thursday that tens of thousands of consumers accessed their reports from her company, despite some technical glitches that slowed down Web site traffic.

"It was more than we had anticipated," Martin said. "We encourage consumers who had a difficult time Wednesday to come back at their leisure."

To get a free credit report, consumers can log on to www.AnnualCreditReport.com, created jointly by the credit reporting companies. They also can call toll-free 1-877-322-8228 or mail a form to Box 105281, Atlanta, Ga. 30348-5281. Consumers are allowed one free report per year from each agency.
