To your pet’s health!
For many people, Fido and Fluffy are full fledged members of the family, and the demand for pet health insurance is on the rise. When considering coverage, here are some things you should know:
• The majority of pet insurance comes in two forms: 1) Comprehensive and accident indemnity. 2) A preferred provider organization, which is more like human insurance. PPO coverage typically provides discounts at participating veterinary clinics.
• Policies generally cover vet exams, hospital stays, surgical charges, and prescription medication.
• Premiums for a dog average about $20 a month for health and accident coverage. A rider for routine care might add an additional $100 per year. Cat premiums are usually less.
• Most policies won’t cover pre-existing conditions. Breeds susceptible to certain ailments, such as vision or joint problems, may not be covered.
• Consider purchasing your policy before pets enter adulthood, when medical issues become more prevalent.
